FBI Seizes Domain Names In Online Gambling Crackdown http://j.mp/hWLZ5i (This message on Google Buzz) - - - http://j.mp/hvJncJ (DomainPulse) "The tactics used, that is seizing domain names, are the same as those used last year against websites accused of copyright violations. As the Times notes, the tactic may only be temporarily effective as websites can re-establish themselves using a country code domain, for example, and be out the reach of US law enforcement." - - - At least some of these sites have now re-homed to non-dot-com addresses beyond U.S. control. However, a relevant question is the propriety of the U.S. using control over the dot-com registry to effectively cut off sites globally that use that domain. Is there any logical reason why the rest of the world should continue to accept such unilateral behavior impacting their sites, which exists as a sorry attribute of the domain name system's dangerously centralized structure at that level, with dot-com in particular subject to the U.S.' whims without any form of international consultation or international due process? --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Quora: http://www.quora.com/Lauren-Weinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
