Comcast-Time Warner Cable Deal Will Reshape US Broadband (Sam Gustin) (Vice Motherboard): http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-fccs-comcast-time-warner-cable-decision-will-reshape-broadband-in-america "We're at a critical crossroads," Michael Copps, who served as a FCC commissioner from 2001 to 2009 and is now a special advisor to DC-based public interest group Common Cause, told me in a recent interview. "We have dumbed down our civic dialogue dramatically because of the effects of media consolidation on news and information." The FCC's role in evaluating the merger is crucial, because the agency has a statutory responsibility to ensure that the merger advances the public interest, even as it addresses other issues such as net neutrality and municipal broadband. - - - We assume coincidentally, Time Warner Cable suffered a massive nationwide outage of Internet services this morning, affecting more than 10 million subscribers. After a merger, they could presumably kill the Internet services of far more subscribers just as quickly! Perhaps Comcast will put that in their arguments to the FCC. No, probably not. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy I am a consultant to Google -- I speak only for myself, not for them.
