Network Solutions Charging Credit Cards Without Permission ----- Forwarded message from [withheld by request] ----- Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2012 10:19:53 -NNNN From: [] Subject: network solutions nonsense To: PRIVACY Forum mailing list <privacy@vortex.com> Hi Lauren, Not sure if this interests you, but might bear investigating. I have about 50 domains registered with Network Solutions, all with "auto-renew" turned OFF. After receiving a notice that a renewal had been made (and paid for with my credit card on record without my consent), I checked and found that NS had turned auto-renew to ON for all of my domains. (Paradoxically, I was still receiving warning notices that I would lose certain domains if I "didn't act now" to renew them.) I was not allowed to switch these domains back to OFF using the online admin tool. I was required instead to call into Customer Support, who, of course, tried to upsell me on everything from new domain extensions to, you guessed it, auto-renew! Support at NS told me that auto-renew had been turned on for my benefit, so that I wouldn't risk losing any of the domains important to me. I had them switch everything back to OFF, but it made me wonder if this is now standard practice at NS. Given that they have account holders' credit card information, and can run charges with impunity, this starts shading into scam territory. Or, at least, that seems so to me. I wouldn't put out on argument based on my experience alone, but perhaps this is systematic, and might be worth some investigation. ...
