Federal Judge Orders Google, Facebook to Disappear Hundreds of Sites http://j.mp/vmYLTc (Wired) "After a series of one-sided hearings, luxury goods maker Chanel has won recent court orders against hundreds of websites trafficking in counterfeit luxury goods. A federal judge in Nevada has agreed that Chanel can seize the domain names in question and transfer them all to US-based registrar GoDaddy. The judge also ordered "all Internet search engines" and "all social media websites"-explicitly naming Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Bing, Yahoo, and Google-to "de-index" the domain names and to remove them from any search results." - - - The actual court order (PDF) is here: http://j.mp/v1bpai (Serving Notice) Toward the end, it conveniently lists all of the affected domains, many of which (when I semi-randomly surveyed a few minutes ago) were still operational under those names. And of course, even after the domain names are pulled and their search results subjected to government-ordered Newspeak obliteration, many will presumably continue to operate based on their IP addresses, which busy sites all over the world are presumably archiving right now for future use. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
