Unfortunately confused New York Times story on DNSSEC (+ King Kong) http://j.mp/mNt8HX (This message on Google Buzz) - - - http://j.mp/iJhsms ("New York Times" Article) "It won't matter where you are in the world or who you are in the world, you're going to be able to authenticate everyone and everything..." - - - Wow! Our security and identity problems are solved! No more spams or phishing! No more cybercrime! All thanks to DNSSEC! *** NOT! *** The quote above is unfortunately representative of the hype regarding DNSSEC (feeding from Singapore in sync with the ICANN meeting) that apparently misled the Times' excellent John Markoff into a discussion of DNSSEC loaded with technical hyperbole. Another choice quote: "Secure DNS makes it possible to make phone calls over the Internet secure from eavesdropping and other kinds of snooping ..." which is of course utterly misleading. I'll leave as an exercise for the reader the fun of digging through the rest of the exaggerations that funneled from Singapore on this topic. Obviously, DNSSEC is very important, but only because DNS is such an unholy mess. In reality, DNSSEC is attempting to patch a system that needs to be entirely replaced for a range of reasons. It's sort of like chaining an unruly King Kong on stage in a crowded theater. You probably remember how that turned out ... --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
