Yes, the "Conan vs. Final Cut Pro X" video was blocked ... BUT ... http://j.mp/jjl90f (This message on Google Buzz) - - - Egads! Yes, I know. Within a short time of my referencing the Friday Off-Topic Video: "Conan vs. Apple Final Cut Pro X" -- the video was pulled off YouTube by "Team Coco" from the (now unfortunate) YouTube user who was hosting it. Hundreds or thousands of stories about that video around the Net now lead to a YT takedown page. One reader told me that they managed to see the video once, but it was blocked between their first and second plays just seconds apart. Now that's a tease. (Reference: http://j.mp/kQOWyZ [NNSquad]) OK. That is Team Coco's right, of course, however misguided in this case. What to do? Well, we can still view the video over at the official Conan site as part of last night's full show. Unfortunately, if you drag over to the point on the video timeline where the item in question starts, you'll find yourself faced with between three and six minutes of generic, untargeted, basic cable ads. Ouch. Now, if you're interested in the technical details of embedded video players as I am, you might note an oddity regarding Conan's player. Let's say you navigate to the video page linked below, and let it begin playing. Then you decide to click on a timeline point very close to the end and (without releasing the mouse button) drag the pointer back until you reach about 25:05 (but no farther), and then release the mouse button. After waiting maybe 20 seconds or so (be patient) for buffering to invisibly catch up, I wonder what would happen? Do be aware, however, that under various upcoming laws now working their way through Congress, performing the experiment above may soon be a federal "commercial circumvention" crime -- or some such. "So if you can't do the crime, uh time, don't play with the timeline." Again, have a good weekend. http://j.mp/lt7vHw (Video - Team Coco) --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
