Google denies imminent launch of facial recognition app Contrary to the impression given in a CNN story today ( http://j.mp/gMvXZJ ), Google informs me that there has been no change in the status of their work regarding facial recognition for Google Goggles, as far as any imminent product launch would be concerned. Specifically: "As we've said for more than a year, we will not add facial recognition to Goggles unless we have strong privacy protections in place. We're still working on them. We have nothing to announce at this time." The CNN piece does seem to imply some sort of specific launch, but it appears that the reporter was briefed essentially on the same status quo that has been present for quite some time. Clearly, Google understands the extremely sensitive issues involved in this technology area. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Quora: http://www.quora.com/Lauren-Weinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
