I totally agree.  My read on this is that TM pays Google a commission
for a new customer (generally 200 last time I heard a number) and pays
for that out of the higher per month bill (if you buy the unlocked phone
it is about 20 less per month with TM).  That would be how TM justifies
an ETF to recover the commission - but then there is no justification
for Google to charge back for the phone as well of course.  The
relationship between Google and TM is unclear - for instance, if you buy
the subsidized phone from Google, the only choice of TM plan is the
cheapest one available, suggesting that they are not acting in concert
to push out services with the phone.

The numbers add up the same way whether the 179 is paid to Google or TM.
Google still wants the difference between the 179 and the full phone
price back, plus you pay the T-M ETF.
