Governments in combative mood over gTLD safeguard mechanisms (World Trademark Review): http://www.worldtrademarkreview.com/daily/detail.aspx?g=D59FED9D-795C-40ED-8FF2-3C8B35F464E6 - - - Tellingly, at a time when the big political issue of the moment is the proposed transfer of the IANA function to ICANN, Kroes used the failure to issue a thinly veiled threat about ICANN's future, warning: "I fear that the failure of ICANN to take due account of the wider public interest will undermine confidence in your organisation and in our attempts to preserve and strengthen the current model of internet governance. The lack of adequate redress mechanisms and, above all, the lack of accountability demonstrate the need for significant reform of ICANN even before the current debate on the global Internet governance system comes to a conclusion. And the situation is not coherent with ICANN's own commitment to strengthen your accountability towards the global community. If such a solution is not put in place for these gTLDs, then the problems will repeat themselves with other indications, and the result risks to be a widespread and damaging rejection of the current model altogether. It is your duty to avoid such a crisis: ICANN is a private, not-for-profit corporation serving the global community and, as such, you must carry out your activities in conformity with relevant principles of international law and applicable international conventions and local law." - - - --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: http://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
