EU ruling could doom Wikipedia, Internet Archive, LexisNexus, and more By the way, while media coverage of this horrendous EU ruling has concentrated on search engines, there is every reason to believe that the same logic will be rapidly expanded not only to primary sources but to other forms of archives and "encyclopedias" as well. I would expect Wikipedia to be a particular target, with persons far and wide demanding removal of any and all materials that they find displeasing about themselves (this would likely extend to complaints by the estates of deceased persons as well). Commercial research firms like LexisNexus will also be targeted. Archives of all sorts -- newspapers, the Internet Archive's "Wayback Machine" -- and an endless list more, will be in the crosshairs. The EU wants to unleash what will be the most extensive censorship and information whitewashing push since Orwell's Big Brother. And the ultimate irony is that in the end, for all the resources ruined and crooked politicians and criminals who try take advantage of this situation, it will likely fail miserably in its primary goal. I anticipate that the EU decision if enforced will trigger the blossoming of the "Streisand Effect" on a global scale never before imagined. Persons attempting to purge sites of materials about themselves will find that same data duplicated on hundreds or thousands of sites, bouncing around the world and attracting more attention than it ever had before. The EU ruling demonstrates such a profound ignorance of Internet realities that it would be absolutely hilarious if it wasn't so fundamentally serious. Get your popcorn ready, sit back, and watch the "fun" -- this show is gonna blow your mind. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: http://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
