I love the Naval Observatory, but I hate crummy spelling correctors Yes, apropos the previous posting, it's the Naval Observatory, not the Navel Observatory (the latter is a whole different barrel of fish). What's interesting is when I went back and looked at my original Twitter and G+ postings from which I copy/pasted here, the correct spelling of Naval was present. Hmm. What I just discovered was that one of the external word list corpora used by my mail system has (make that *had*) an explicit entry for "Navel Observatory" with the incorrect spelling. I actually know whom to blame for this particular word list, but I won't shame them here. You know who you are ... More seriously, the error rate in some of these autocorrect systems is painfully high. A common problem is accidentally adding misspelled words to personal dictionaries, causing them to be considered valid going forward -- and sometimes viewing those added words lists to clean them up is nontrivial. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Russian invasion. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: http://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
