Dear Lauren, I have no idea who Western European leaders have as advisors, but the only thing they should do is to fire them for their incompetence. European Internet networks have been inter-connected since the early 90s through dozens and dozens of IXPs. Intra-European traffic seldom transits via the US. In fact, a high proportion of European Traffic going elsewhere in the world does not transit via the US at all. In other words, this "proposal" is not worth the e-paper it's written on. Oh and if they're complaining about GMAIL. That's a *service*, not an Internet problem... Well, the day a European Company provides a free email service hosted in Europe that's as convenient and fast as GMAIL, then I'll consider it.
