Newsweek (1975): "No Place to Hide" http://j.mp/1ixNX3t (AES) "That day may have arrived. NEWSWEEK has learned that the country's most secret intelligence operation, the National Security Agency, already possesses the computerized equipment to monitor nearly all overseas telephone calls and most domestic and international printed messages ..." - 8 September 1975 - - - And you can find similar stories dating back to this point and earlier about a vast number of other countries' surveillance capabilities. Point being, this is endemic. It's not going away anytime soon, and will not be changed significantly on a unilateral basis. So encryption, to at least discourage *mass* suveillance of this type (as opposed to targeted surveillance), continues to be good policy. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: http://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
