"The Silent Power of the NSA" (New York Times - *1983*) http://j.mp/17KH6z4 (New York Times - 27 March 83 // More than 30 years ago) "A Federal Court of Appeals recently ruled that the largest and most secretive intelligence agency of the United States, the National Security Agency, may lawfully intercept the overseas communications of Americans even if it has no reason to believe they are engaged in illegal activities. The ruling, which also allows summaries of these conversations to be sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, significantly broadens the already generous authority of the N.S.A. to keep track of American citizens." - - - A reminder from more than 30 years ago for those persons who have been spouting the "I'm shocked! Shocked that NSA is conducting surveillance of Americans!" lines and attempting to claim that Edward Snowden's data dump was somehow expansively revelatory. For those of us who have been "watching the watchers" for decades, it's all pretty much an old story. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: http://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
