Failing Los Angeles school district approves sweetheart deal with Apple for student iPads "LAUSD Under Scrutiny For $30M iPad Purchase For Students" http://j.mp/11onD7q (CBS) "The plan was approved Tuesday by the Board of Education, who are using funds from a 2008 voter-approved bond issue to upgrade school technology. Before the vote, United Teachers Los Angeles President Warren Fletcher asked board members to delay their decision. The expenditure has struck a nerve with the teachers union who, after having undergone major layoffs and imposed furloughs, claim the funds would be better spent on rehiring staff members. Even Apple's competitor was on hand to criticize the move." - - - Given the LAUSD's continuing failure at even basic education, facilities, and so much more, this expenditure at this time -- when so many students can't even get lunch and vast numbers of teachers are furloughed -- is extraordinarily eyebrow-raising, as is the sweetheart deal with Apple and the publishing firm. Follow the money! By the way, in other school systems that have tried this, the number of broken iPads and associated wasted funds has been extraordinary. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info - Data Wisdom Explorers League: http://www.dwel.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren / Twitter: http://vortex.com/t-lauren Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
