'Free and open' Wi-Fi for public in Twin Cities expanding http://j.mp/127z5iZ (Twin Cities) "This week, the Philadelphia-based company detailed its nationwide plan to modify or replace its home customers' wireless routers so that they broadcast two Wi-Fi signals: the private Wi-Fi network accessed by the homeowners, and a separate, public Xfinity-branded Wi-Fi signal accessible to all -- neighbors and passersby." - - - Except after a couple of hours of use for non-subscribers -- *it's NOT free*. As much as I support public Wi-Fi, I can't think of any reason I'd want to support this essentially pay-based service on my own ISP connections unless the ISP made it seriously worth my while -- especially given how much they charge for so little speed. And despite the supposed safe harbor, this sounds like an invitation to trouble from drive-by loonies. There's no obvious incentive here. Let Tom Sawyer whitewash his own fence. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info - Data Wisdom Explorers League: http://www.dwel.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren / Twitter: http://vortex.com/t-lauren Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
