At least two major Silicon Valley companies routinely push back on
demands from federal authorities for customer Internet data in an
attempt to minimize the information released, said people familiar
with the process. At Google Inc., GOOG +0.58% senior lawyers
carefully examine each order by hand, and when they think the requests
are too far-reaching they contest them, said a person familiar with
the practice, who added the company's approach to classified and
unclassified requests is the same. Facebook Inc. FB -0.17% reviews
each request or order, whether from local, federal or foreign
governments, and "we frequently reject such requests outright, or
require the government to scale down its requests, or require the
government to provide additional information about the legal basis for
    its requests," a spokeswoman said.
