Reuters: Vint Cerf on "real name" issues http://j.mp/WGJa5x (Reuters) "In an interview with Reuters, Cerf acknowledged that the search giant's sweeping push in the past 18 months to institute real-name authentication for Google+ and other services has sparked intense debate within its Mountain View, California, headquarters. But he argued that current name policy, which allows for some users to display pseudonyms, offers adequate "choice" in how users choose to represent themselves." - - - The key here, as Vint explains, is that different kinds of services need different sorts of naming criteria to be most useful, nor, I might add, is every service necessarily suitable to be used by everyone, everywhere, in every situation. Identity can range from fully confirmed to totally anonymous in the "brick and mortar" world, and the same applies here. That's why, for example, Gmail effectively has no "real name" requirements at all, while Google+ has a different (and still evolving -- remember it's still a relatively new service) methodology in this area. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info - Data Wisdom Explorers League: http://www.dwel.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren / Twitter: http://vortex.com/t-lauren Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
