Most of Kansas City Now Set to Get Wired With Google Fiber http://j.mp/S56Soj (Wired) "A last-minute push by Google and Kansas City community groups has qualified most neighborhoods to get wired up as part of the company's effort to blanket the city with ultra-high-speed internet connections. Google says at least 180 neighborhoods out of 202 had rallied enough residents to pre-register for the Google Fiber service by last night's deadline to ensure the company would lay cable to their front doors. "We couldn't be more thrilled," says Jenna Wandres, Google's spokeswoman for the project. The apparent success spares Google some potential embarrassment. As late as Friday, the dividing line between Kansas City, Missouri neighborhoods that had qualified and those that hadn't, ran more or less straight down the middle of the city - right between the city's whiter, more affluent west side and the poorer, historically black east side. Much of the east side was poised to miss out on Google fiber all together." - - - The fact that this required such a big push over the last possible couple of days suggests more than a bit of last minute consternation. Couldn't this state of affairs have been anticipated from ongoing data as the sign-up process proceeded over its entire duration? --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info - Data Wisdom Explorers League: http://www.dwel.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren / Twitter: http://vortex.com/t-lauren Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
