Trading fraud via GPS spoofing http://j.mp/xFidE1 (Wired UK) "GPS "spoofers" -- devices that create false GPS signals to fool receivers into thinking that they are at a different location or different time -- could be used to defraud financial institutions, according to Todd Humphreys from the University of Texas." - - - In theory at least, I believe that many cellular sites could also be disrupted, since modern cell nets depend on GPS timing. A lot of eggs in the GPS basket, even with newer systems gradually coming online. It's hard not to think a bit about Larry Niven's old "Ringworld" stories, where a massive interstellar civilization essentially collapsed after a room temperature superconductor on which they depended was biologically sabotaged. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Data Wisdom Explorers League: http://www.dwel.org - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren / Twitter: http://vortex.com/t-lauren Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com _______________________________________________ nnsquad mailing list http://lists.nnsquad.org/mailman/listinfo/nnsquad
