Nanny state run wild: U.S. seeks to block vehicle electronic devices http://j.mp/zebq9f (Washington Post) "Drivers won't be able to text, browse, tweet or dial on factory-installed devices if auto manufacturers follow new federal guidelines to disable the gadgets while the wheels are rolling. In announcing the latest step in his campaign against distracted driving Thursday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the government might next extend the guidelines to cover virtually every portable electronic device that might find its way into a vehicle." - - - Note that this is currently directed at factory-installed devices, not portable ones. However, the unintended consequences of such controls, as drivers try to work around them and turn increasingly to portable devices as a result, could actually cause far more problems than they solve. Blocking portable devices, as LaHood is now suggesting might be the next step, would have enormous implications since all passengers in vehicles would likely be affected, not just drivers.
