Google fined in Brazil for refusing to reveal bloggers' identities http://j.mp/p9YRRB (The Next Web) "Arguing that its role was limited to hosting and citing freedom of information, Google Brasil didn't comply, which led the judge to order a US$3100 daily fine in May. Again, Google Brasil refused to pay and reveal the bloggers' identity, which led to a new sentence this week, although it can still appeal." - - - In the context of controversies over "real names" and Google+ vis-a-vis this case, I believe this is an illustration of the complexities of these matters, and how different products and venues may quite reasonably have different identity characteristics. Determining the most appropriate "identity level" for any given service is of course decidedly nontrivial and open to reasoned discussion and differing points of view. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
