UK Prime Minister calls for vast social media censorship http://j.mp/o310np (Atlantic) "Cameron's proposed interference in social media in the name of security provoked instant reaction online. The Globe and Mail's Doug Saunders called the suggestion "draconian," Vanity Fair contributor Emma Gilbey Keller deemed it "ominous," and online activist Jim Killock labeled it a potential attack on free speech. Others wondered how authorities would even go about detecting impending violence online. Twitter users in the Middle East, where regimes are cracking down on Internet use to quash uprisings, were also unhappy. Cameron "will now be the most cited reference by all despots clamping down on social media," wrote one Syrian activist." - - - Nor can he succeed in effectively censoring people's use of social media, without shutting down the phone and data networks. He may be able to drive such activities underground, however, and would indeed place the UK on the same page as various despots around the world. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
