[ NNSquad ] In a TV commercial: "Search" rather than a domain name
In a TV commercial: "Search" rather than a domain name http://j.mp/qm5cpz (This message on Google+) I specifically remember the first time that I saw an Internet domain name used in an ad. It was for Santa Monica Bank, and it was on the side of a Santa Monica "big blue bus." I don't recall the date, but I do remember noting it as a potentially significant event. Last night I saw something that may perhaps have similar significance. A commercial for IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) did not include a domain name, but suggested (both via their graphics and narration) that interested viewers "Search:" for IFAW. While apparently this is not uncommon in some other parts of the world, this is the first time I recall seeing an ad that promoted Search rather than a specific domain name (or more recently, Facebook pages). For those of us who believe that the time has come (for many reasons) to move beyond domain names (and the DNS) to other, fully distributed forms of site addressing identity where Search will play a major role (either IDONS [ http://j.mp/h7T2gF (Lauren's Blog) ] or something else), it's at least another moment worth noting, and perhaps a harbinger of things to come. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://vortex.com/g+lauren Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
