[ NNSquad ] Re: Blocking DNS - 17 Mar 2011 - by Paul Vixie - "COICA and Secure DNS"

Here is a counter point to that paper.
http://www.hightechforum.org/dns-filtering-is-essential-to-the-internet/

All Vixie and the other engineers are asserting is that DNS filtering breaks
DNSSEC sites that are filtered. They do not claim that non-filtered sites
are broken or that DNSSEC in the general case is broken. But what's the
purpose of DNS filtering? Isn't it to break filtered sites completely, and
not just the DNSSEC aspect of those sites?

[ For those unfamiliar with it, the "HIGHTECHForum" is a joint
effort of Richard and "the MITA Group" who assert that [from their
About page]: "Some of the most critical technology and
telecommunications policy debates take place without the input of
those most knowledgeable about the issues, and most affected by
the outcomes" -- a state of affairs that they apparently feel
     obligated and competent to remedy.

Phew, sure is lucky that we've got "most knowledgeable" people
out there taking care of us simple-minded, ignorant, uninformed
     blokes!

Blocking DNS - 17 Mar 2011 - by Paul Vixie - "COICA and Secure DNS"

http://j.mp/qHnkDB (ISC)

"Nevertheless the raw uncomfortable truth of the matter is that any
form of mandated "DNS blocking'' whose goal is to make certain domain
names unreachable will be indistinguishable from the result of a
Secure DNS failure - and a failure is a failure is a failure."

It should be noted that the MPAA's response on these issues is the assertion
that most
users are too stupid to understand how to change their DNS (presumably even
after
being given step by step instructions) and that not permitting content
owners to
manipulate the DNS to protect their profit centers would amount to allowing
the
Internet to "decay into a lawless Wild West."
