FBI gets extended powers; U.S. pushes Internet freedoms *outside* the U.S.

F.B.I. Agents Get Leeway to Push Privacy Bounds
http://j.mp/kHJulv (New York Times)

""Claiming additional authorities to investigate people only further
raises the potential for abuse," Mr. German said, pointing to
complaints about the bureau's surveillance of domestic political
advocacy groups and mosques and to an inspector general's findings in
2007 that the F.B.I. had frequently misused "national security
letters," which allow agents to obtain information like phone records
      without a court order."

"Just minor tweaks" -- nothing to worry about ... right?

U.S. Underwrites Internet Detour Around Censors [*outside* the U.S.!]
http://j.mp/jwkeqj (New York Times)

"The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy "shadow"
Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine
repressive governments that seek to silence them by censoring or
      shutting down telecommunications networks."

Since we've discussed the irony of this situation -- the U.S. pushing
for an uncensored Internet outside the U.S. at the same time it's
demanding encryption keys and the ability to liquidate domain
names and censor search engines here in the U.S. -- I won't
belabor it here, except to note that this hypocrisy was not
lost on most persons sending me references to this story.
