Remembering the man who created the technology of modern music http://j.mp/jBilAv (This message on Google Buzz) - - - With so many of the Net's intellectual property controversies -- and associated conflicts over piracy, privacy, and related concerns -- revolving around popular music one way or another, we must still remember that there are technology giants on whose shoulders countless musicians have figuratively stood -- innovative pioneers without whom we'd likely be in a very different place today in terms of music and music tech. Would the iPod have been invented solely to carry classical music and folk songs? Perhaps. Perhaps not. One of the giants was Les Paul, whose birthday is honored with a fascinating interactive Google Doodle for the next 24 hours or so on the Google home page. Les Paul created the electric guitar, multitrack recording, and so much more. Also, I wanted to mention a wonderful little 15 minute video mini-documentary that the New York Times produced back in 2009 re Les, available at: http://j.mp/phOik (New York Times) If you've been a long-time fan of Les as I have, or if you don't even know his name, watch it and be amazed for the first time -- or all over again -- at what he accomplished. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
