Pentagon says black-hat hacking can be an act of war http://j.mp/j94Sse (This message on Google Buzz) - - - http://j.mp/iwIzdz (WSJ) "The Pentagon has concluded that computer sabotage coming from another country can constitute an act of war, a finding that for the first time opens the door for the U.S. to respond using traditional military force ... Pentagon officials believe the most-sophisticated computer attacks require the resources of a government. For instance, the weapons used in a major technological assault, such as taking down a power grid, would likely have been developed with state support, Pentagon officials say." - - - Ya' gotta hand it to those guys. Put the military in charge of "cybersecurity" and you can rest assured they'll be thinking in terms of traditional military responses. It's hard to imagine how they could have worded a more enticing "challenge" to the "black-hat" hacker community. "Oh yea? It takes state support to knock out those poorly protected power systems? Wanna bet?" Now to emphasize this point, I'm unfortunately forced to link to a scene from a film I always disliked, even though I had (and still have, somewhere) the same model IMSAI 8080 micro kit that was featured in this sequence: http://j.mp/mlNPrL (YouTube) "Shall we play a game, Pentagon?" Let's hope not, boys and girls. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
