I'm a big believer in countermeasures, and some decent tools do exist. But they are not all that simple to use, nor foolproof given the trackers' own countermeasures. 

When you say "without too much trouble" that's part of the problem. It's actually a lot of trouble for the average user. I'm pretty good at this stuff and I'm constantly baffled by the latest tricks from the trackers. I'm never sure if if what I'm doing is actually working. I suspect not.

The larger problem is the default: open surveillance. The default usually wins.
