New Jersey may ban public photography of children's waist areas

"But a law being considered in the New Jersey legislature would make it
illegal to photograph or record kids 'a reasonable parent or guardian
would not expect his child to be the subject of such reproduction' ..."
     ...
" ... said the bill would stand a better chance of being found
constitutional if it were changed so that photographing only the
genital region of minors, even if fully clothed, would be outlawed."

Yep. Ready to bash your head into the wall yet? Both ridiculous
ideas, and simply more steps along the essentially totalitarian path
toward the banning of most public photography "for the public good" --
utter hogwash. The same sort of reasoning has been used to attack
Google Street View in the name of theoretical, overblown, often
paranoid fears, vs. the obvious public good that comes from the
availability of such imagery as shot in public places from public
thoroughfares.

And their idea of only banning what I'll euphemistically call "waist
shots" is just laughable as well, especially given the post-production
zooming capabilities of typical high-resolution digital cameras and
software. I mean, what would happen if we used that basic technology
to zoom in on standard, not particularly high resolution Web image of
a random tech guy on an old motorcyle, an image that the guy uses on
his blog and the result is ( http://j.mp/mvvy59 [Lauren's Blog] ) ...
Oh my God! Hide the children!
