White House to Unveil Their Trusted Identities in Cyberspace Scheme + My Comments http://j.mp/fnxkvg (This message in Google Buzz) - - - I will of course be very interested to see the details of this initiative. I am already on the record as being extremely skeptical that such projects in general can be deployed without risking dangerous "mission creep," abuse of data in various contexts despite promises of compartmentalization/control, and continual pressures that would move such government-linked identity constructs increasingly toward "required" rather than "voluntary" for an ever broader range of Web sites and services. These concerns exist and persist even if one assumes complete trust in the veracity, motives, and long-term policy and political stability of stakeholders advocating such systems, since infrastructures created for ostensibly laudable purposes today can often still be subverted for evil purposes tomorrow. My most recent primary discussion of these issues is at: Internet Freedom Alert: Obama Admin Pushing Ahead Today with Dangerous "Internet Trusted Identity" Scheme http://j.mp/eZug4M (Lauren's Blog - 1/7/2011) - Please note the several update links now present at the top of that blog posting.
