[ NNSquad ] Towards Street-Level Client-Independent IP Geolocation
Towards Street-Level Client-Independent IP Geolocation http://j.mp/hZWbIi (Usenix [PDF]) We have developed a client-independent geolocation system able to geolocate IP addresses with more than an order of magnitude better precision than the best previous method. - - - This is interesting work. However, in many cases the results seem not to be of significantly more accuracy in the described contexts than would simply be directly using the published address for the entities involved. And several of the aspects that currently qualify specific addresses and tests for exclusion (as probable inaccurate data) would seem likely to represent an ever larger proportion of the real-world situation over time, as more servers move to distant cloud-based, rather than locally-based, infrastructures. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://j.mp/laurenbuzz Quora: http://www.quora.com/Lauren-Weinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
