NYTimes: Drumming Up More Internet Addresses + my comments http://j.mp/f70rg2 (New York Times) "It was 1977," Mr. Cerf said, in an interview last week. "We thought we were doing an experiment. The problem was, the experiment never ended." - - - Overall, it seems to me that this article takes a somewhat overly optimistic tone. I'm particularly concerned by quotes like: "Most Internet users have no idea they're using IPv4 today and if things go well they will have no idea they're using IPv6 in the future." - Leo Vegoda of ICANN This kind of statement may be technically true, if we assume that "most" Internet users use the Net mostly or totally for Web browsing. For anyone beyond that level, there may be a "world of hurt" when trying to deal with their ISPs, many of whom are considering interim "solutions" like "ISP-level NAT" that could have drastic negative implications for large numbers of applications (some of which various ISPs would like to kill off anyway, as it happens). --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lauren@vortex.com): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - Global Coalition for Transparent Internet Performance: http://www.gctip.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Google Buzz: http://bit.ly/lauren-buzz Quora: http://www.quora.com/Lauren-Weinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com
