"Gov't crackdown spurs initiatives to route around DNS" (IT World)
 + my comments

http://bit.ly/dTcFKQ (IT World)

One comment I'll make now regarding the relatively lengthy discussion
of IDONS in this article. I have not said that root centralization of
naming systems was necessarily a mistake *at the time* that the DNS
was designed and implemented, especially given the perceived scale of
the problems to be solved then.

But now, in the 21st century, given the availability of advanced
crypto systems and distributed networking methodologies, highly
evolved search engine capabilities and so on, the old model, in my
opinion, simply does not make sense any more. And a number of recent
events have obviously rather dramatically exposed the vulnerabilities
and unjustifiable cost structures that have unfortunately now become
part and parcel of the DNS system as we know it today.

I'll also take this opportunity to thank everyone who has expressed
interest in IDONS. Don't panic if I haven't responded to you
individually -- there were so many expressions of interest that it
will take some time to prepare a reasonable (and ideally threaded)
platform to foster optimum communication on these topics given the
wide range of potential participants and stakeholders. Don't worry,
I've got all your IDONS e-mail safely spinning -- and I'll send out an
update as soon as possible.

Thanks again.
