----- Forwarded message from Gail Puder <Gail.Puder@ipc.on.ca> ----- Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2010 10:32:50 -0400 From: Gail Puder <Gail.Puder@ipc.on.ca> Subject: Redesigning IP Geolocation: Privacy by Design and Online Targeted Advertising To: Info IPC <info@ipc.on.ca> Accept-Language: en-US acceptlanguage: en-US Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian today released a new paper, Redesigning IP Geolocation: Privacy by Design and Online Targeted Advertising. In this thought piece, focus is directed to a single facet of online targeted advertising - the developing area of precise IP geolocation, and the potential role of ISPs in the ad serving model. In particular, the work of Ontario company Bering Media, Inc. is described. Bering Media identified privacy issues inherent with the current implementations of geo-targeting (targeting ads online based on the physical location of the user), and looked to redesign the technique to improve functionality while enhancing privacy - a positive-sum, not zero-sum, approach. This paper, attached as a PDF document, is representative of the solutions made possible by the combination of innovative thought and Privacy by Design.
