Facebook explains today's prolonged outage

This outage -- the worst for FB in over four years -- didn't just
affect their main site, but resulted in nasty "DNS Error" text being
splattered on vast numbers of affiliated ("like buttons" - etc.)
sites around the world.  The "race condition" (my words, not theirs)
reportedly behind the problem sounds eerily familiar to many of us
I'm sure.
