[ NNSquad ] FW: FCC Chairman Opposes Fees for Internet Priority
I'm getting a bit annoyed by Edward Wyatt's sloppy reporting. Wyatt says: WASHINGTON - The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday that he believed it was "unacceptable" for Internet service providers to offer faster Internet transmission to content providers willing to pay higher fees. But he quotes: "Any outcome, any deal that doesn't preserve the freedom and openness of the Internet for consumers and entrepreneurs will be unacceptable," This cited quotation doesn't actually say what Wyatt says. He seems to be assuming that fee based faster Internet transmission erodes the free and open Internet. Now he's free to hold this opinion and so is the Chairman. But this almost seems like wishful thinking on the part of Wyatt and he's stretching that quote beyond reason. Now it may very well be that the Chairman holds this view (and the FCC's NPRM paragraph 106 seems to back this), but the quotation that Wyatt cites does not in any way confirm or refute this. George [ Many of these press articles seem to be conflating "speed" with "prioritization" which is also confusing matters. -- Lauren Weinstein NNSquad Moderator ] -----Original Message----- From: nnsquad-bounces+george_ou=lanarchitect.net@nnsquad.org [mailto:nnsquad-bounces+george_ou=lanarchitect.net@nnsquad.org] On Behalf Of Lauren Weinstein Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2010 5:16 PM To: nnsquad@nnsquad.org Subject: [ NNSquad ] FCC Chairman Opposes Fees for Internet Priority FCC Chairman Opposes Fees for Internet Priority http://bit.ly/aM0Njb (New York Times) --Lauren-- NNSquad Moderator
