[ NNSquad ] Re: Alarming "rumors" re Australia's proposed data retention regime

Hello,

Q: The data retention drive in Europe and Australia specify a length
of time for which the ISPs/Telecoms have to retain data. In Australia,
"the government was only going to require a retention period of two
years at this stage" during which period the Government Agencies may
access the data. Are we to assume that the Government Agencies will
selectively access specific information on rare individuals and
discard most data after the 2purpose is served? Or could there be a
possibility that the Law and Order Agencies need this time (6 months
or two years) to access, sort and mirror the data to be stored in
their own data servers indefinitely? If I am completely wrong, is it
explicitly mentioned anywhere that "neither the ISP nor the
Governments" will retain data beyond 6 months / 2 years ? If the draft
legislative documents are silent on time limits for retention of the
data accessed by law and order agencies, there is definitely the
possibility that some data will be retained INDEFINITELY.
