More on the Insanely Wrong Google Conviction in Italy http://bit.ly/avoaIl (New York Times) I've said this before and I'll say it again. And I'll keep on saying it. While we've come to expect censorship and draconian controls over Internet content in places like China and Iran, the continuing escalation of such actions in what we normally think of as "Western" countries such as Italy and Australia -- and even moves here in the U.S. -- are the stirrings of governments' traditional fears of open communications. And these are only the opening salvos in what will be a titanic war for Internet control that will be no less critial to society at large than the attempts to hamstring the printing press centuries ago. Search engines and user video hosting services (e.g. Google/YouTube) are among the most obvious targets of these attacks, since they provide powerful gateways for individuals around the world to find and share information and experiences. It is crucial that persons and organizatins that support an open Internet take an active role in these battles. --Lauren-- NNSquad Moderator
