It's 2 and a half years overdue, but better late than never.

The cost of SSL is primarily borne during the TLS/SSL setup phase which
Google is doing anyways.  The workload of payload encryption is practically
a nonissue.

Now couple this with Chrome SSL whitelists that require a gmail.com to be
HTTPS and we've got a pretty strong solution.
