[ NNSquad ] Two mathematical inspirations for Christmas Day
Greetings. Off-topic I'll admit (consider that a weak apology), but just for today I want to share two YouTube links for mathematically-oriented animations from many years ago, both of which helped to inspire my interests in mathematics and technology -- and I'll bet inspired many others of my generation and beyond. In fact, I'm told that these shorts are still regularly viewed in schools today -- a form of practical near-immortality for the creative folks involved. If you're not familiar with these, they're worth at least a few minutes of your time. If you remember them, watch again and marvel at some brilliant works that talked *up* to people, not down to them. First is 1965's "The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics." Co-produced and co-directed by famed animator Chuck Jones, it's a wonderful short and almost certainly the only cartoon that ever ended with an explicit mathematical pun: http://bit.ly/7ed9Qb Next comes the timeless Disney classic "Donald in Mathmagic Land," which has fascinated generations of students now for a full half century: http://bit.ly/5JFBs6 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! --Lauren-- NNSquad Moderator
