[ NNSquad ] Verizon Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Wording to Change
You'll recall recently discussion here of portions of the Verizon AUP that appeared to prohibit "off-topic" postings on Internet sites, triggered by a Slashdot posting claiming that this was new language. Verizon has now clarified this situation by noting both that the language involved is not new in their AUP, and that it could indeed be construed to be overly broad: After reviewing the comments about our AUP and looking at the language ourselves, we think its worth clarifying what we intend by our policy -- and what we don't intend by it. So we will be clarifying our AUP to address the concerns that have been raised recently about the potential for this language to be read more broadly than we intended. The policy applies to use of Verizon sites, not to third party blog, bulletin board and social networking sites. Link Hoewing / Vice President / Internet and Technology Policy Verizon Assuming final wording in conformance with this statement, it should address both my concern that ISPs should not be in the business of dictating the "relevance" of postings on external sites, and also the goal of AUP language that is as specific as possible, with minimal opportunities for expansive interpretations. --Lauren-- NNSquad Moderator
