U.S. (secretly?) pushing for international treaty to cut file sharers off from Internet http://bit.ly/11jxLt (PC World) The main point of contention here, from my standpoint, is "cutting people off" from the Internet. At least one country has already declared Internet access to be a human right. It is rapidly becoming difficult or impossible to conduct many forms of routine business and day-to-day activities without Net access, especially as government and commercial entities cut back on their brick-and-mortar facilities in favor of Internet users. What's more, how the blazes does an Internet cut off work? If there are multiple persons at a home or facility, how do you cut off the abuser without disrupting innocent associates? Do you create a blacklist banning people from all ISPs? What about cell phone-based Internet access? What about use of public access Internet facilities? What we're seeing, unfortunately, is the entertainment industry using its lobbying clout to deal in an inappropriate manner with a very real problem. Sending notices out to "abusers" is one thing, but when we talk about "cutting people off from the Internet" the image I get is of the Warner Bros. "Tasmanian Devil" spinning around like a small tornado, oblivious to all of the collateral damage it does on the way to its target. --Lauren-- NNSquad Moderator
