[ NNSquad ] Verizon makes nice with P2P

[Resending with proper, subscribed From: address]

Here is an interesting article about the Distributed Computing Industry
Association (DCIA) <http://www.dcia.info> working group called P4P,
which stands for Proactive network Provider Participation for P2P. The
two founder members and chairs come from Pando Networks and
Verizon Communications.

The article is at:
<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/03/24/verizon_p4p_filesharing/>

I particularly find this quote compelling:

"If the question was 'How do we get traffic zingin around the internet,
for nothing, without the help of the ISP and despite its best efforts to
stop us,' then that definitively is the wrong question. If it were simply
told 'you have a network and multiple copies of large files distributed
around that network, how do you build a rapid file delivery
mechanism,' then naturally you reach the DCIA answer."

[ While P2P issues are of course an important facet of Network
Neutrality concerns, I will be cutting back somewhat on
transmission of P2P-related messages except for those that
contain significant new information or that really advance
the debate, at least for the time being.
